Grooveshark is an online music service that lets you enjoy your favorite songs and artists without having to download anything – nor MP3 files, nor an audio player.
When you enter Grooveshark for the first time, you’re invited to start searching for music. Try typing the name of a band; Grooveshark will then display a list of all the songs available from that artist. Whenever you double click, you’ll launch a built-in player, where you can start queuing up songs by dragging and dropping them onto the photostrip at the bottom of the page. The music catalog is quite extensive but, as usual, this depends also on your personal taste.
Grooveshark doesn’t require registration to listen to music, but if you want to have some interesting advanced features, you’re encouraged to create an account. Grooveshark basic accounts are free and it only requires an email address and your birth date.
Once you’re a registered Grooveshark user, you’ll be able to add songs to your personal library, create playlists, share songs on Facebook and Twitter, and mark songs as favorites, among other features. More importantly, you’ll be able to upload your own music from your hard drive.
Besides the free basic accounts, Grooveshark also offers the so called VIP accounts, with support for Last.fm scrobbling, Grooveshark mobile and the Grooveshark desktop client. VIP users also get faster customer support. The VIP accounts cost $3/month or $30/year.
In all, Grooveshark is an excellent online music service that you’re going to love – provided they include the bands you like.
